In a statement shared on his official social media platform, Abiy Ahmed extended his congratulations to all Ethiopians on the occasion of the 85th Anniversary of Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day.
May 5 marks the day Ethiopians commemorate their victory over fascist forces and the full safeguarding of the country’s sovereignty.
The Prime Minister described patriotism as a selfless sacrifice made for the country, centered solely on the nation and its people.
He noted that patriotism represents a citizen’s contribution to the freedom, sovereignty, and reputation of their country.
He emphasized that Ethiopian patriots—mothers and fathers alike—fought against fascist forces for the sake of the nation and its people.
According to the Prime Minister, the patriotic struggle was waged against three enemies: self-interest, traitors, and the invading fascists. Patriotism is letting go of personal interest for the sake of the country’s interest. Patriotism is sacrificing personal honor, personal power, and personal benefit. To accept this requires conquering oneself before the enemy.
He called on Ethiopians to use the occasion as a moment of reflection, assessing their own sense of patriotism and contribution to national development.
Highlighting contemporary challenges, he pointed to poverty, underdevelopment, and corruption as modern “invaders” that demand collective resistance.
The Prime Minister also warned against actions that compromise national interests for personal gain.
The Prime Minister noted that these three challenges self-interest, traitors, and the invading fascists, continue to exist today, albeit in different forms. At the same time, he acknowledged the ongoing presence of patriots across various sectors of society.
For Ethiopia to achieve prosperity, he stressed the need for national patriots in all fields, including industry, agriculture, security, politics, commerce, diplomacy, civil service, healthcare, and education.
He cautioned against individuals who undermine national interests for personal benefit or misuse public resources.
He concluded by stating that national progress and transformation in Ethiopia have been made possible through the efforts of patriots across the country. However, he added that while progress has been achieved, complete victory has yet to be realized.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that a future May 5 will mark not only historical remembrance but also Ethiopia’s emergence as a symbol of African prosperity and as one of the world’s strong nations.
He called on all Ethiopians who love their country to contribute actively toward achieving this vision.
