The corridor development and riverside projects implemented in Addis Ababa are transforming the Ethiopian capital into a modern metropolis and an urban development model for cities across Africa and beyond. The large-scale corridor development initiative has significantly changed the image of the city and the country, while helping to create a more vibrant community, generate wealth, and support economic growth.
Addis Ababa is increasingly being recognized as a city that offers valuable urban development experience not only for Ethiopian cities, but also for cities around the world. Countries are studying the capital’s development model and adapting similar initiatives to improve their own urban centers.

To further promote Ethiopia’s image internationally, the Addis Ababa City Administration is undertaking various activities aimed at promoting the city’s transformation to the global community.
Urban renewal projects in the capital have focused on preserving history and cultural heritage while expanding parks, recreation centers, childcare centers, housing developments, and one-stop service centers. The corridor development and riverside projects, in particular, have attracted attention from cities around the world seeking to learn from Addis Ababa’s experience.
Beyond creating a cleaner and healthier urban environment, the projects have also generated employment opportunities for a number of residents and expedited transportation systems across the city. In particular, they have learned how to coordinate and manage electricity, telephone, and other infrastructure systems.

As part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties with cities around the world, Addis Ababa has signed sister-city agreements with several major international cities, including Beijing, New Delhi, Ankara, Seoul, Stockholm, Cairo, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Dubai, and Baku. These sister-city partnerships help to reinforce cultural, historical, and people-to-people exchanges.
