AMN PLUS-November 2, 2026
The Addis Ababa City Cleaning Management Agency has announced that modern systems are being introduced to maintain the city’s cleanliness sustainably and prevent pollution.
Speaking to AMN, the Agency’s Director General, Gezahagn Desisa, said the city was improving its solid waste management practices by separating waste by type and transporting it carefully using modern vehicles.
He noted that Addis Ababa generates approximately 3,000 tonnes of solid waste daily. To manage this waste, the city collects it at temporary storage sites, where it is sorted at different stages.
Under the system, biodegradable waste is separated into green bags, while non-biodegradable waste is placed in blue bags, the Director General explained.
Recalling previous waste management practices, Gezahagn said solid waste was once collected and transported in open vehicles, contributing to pollution across the city. He noted that the city has now introduced modern, covered vehicles to transport waste securely to disposal sites, helping prevent waste from spreading during transit.
He also recalled that solid waste was previously collected in unprotected areas without fences, creating health risks for residents.
The Director General said the city was now taking measures to prevent pollution by separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and transporting it safely in modern, covered vehicles.
He further disclosed that Addis Ababa currently has approximately 110 fenced temporary solid waste storage sites, adding that efforts have been undertaken to modernize these facilities.
