Mayor of Addis Ababa City, Adanech Abiebie, has announced the inauguration of the DNA, Forensic and Toxicology Testing Center of Excellence, the first of its kind in Ethiopia.
“Today, we have inaugurated and opened for service the country’s first DNA, forensic and toxicology testing center of excellence. This facility will elevate our people’s health services to a new level.

The DNA Information Storage and Comparison System (CODIS) will help address long-standing challenges, including the loss of foreign exchange spent on sending samples abroad and the lengthy turnaround time for test results.
The center enables DNA profiling to confirm paternity in suspected cases, identify individuals, verify family relationships up to genealogical links, and support identity verification through advanced scientific analysis.

This Center of Excellence will significantly strengthen the country’s justice system by ensuring that investigations are grounded in scientific evidence, supporting criminal inquiries, addressing questions of identity and rights, and contributing to the protection of public health.
“In line with our commitment and consistent work ethic over the past five years, we have undertaken extensive efforts in the health sector, including the construction of four world-class hospitals as well as the renovation and expansion of existing facilities,” the Mayor stated
Through the City Administration, we are ushering Ethiopia into a new era of growth and high-tech advancement in the health sector, and this progress will continue.

“We will also continue to prioritize strengthening the dedication, competence, and public trust of our health professionals,” the Mayor reaffirmed
On behalf of myself, the City Administration, and service users, I extend sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the realization of this Center of Excellence from the planning stage to its completion,” the mayor concluded.
