Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said the cityβs goals to upgrade its healthcare services to international standards and establish Addis Ababa as a health tourism destination will be fully realized over the next five years.
The Mayor made the remarks while providing guidance at the concluding session of discussions on the city administrationβs five-year strategic plan and the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year plan.
Mayor Adanech said the main objective is to build the capacity of both public and private health institutions in the city to provide medical services that meet international standards.
She explained that this will enable Ethiopians to access quality medical treatment in their own country without having to travel abroad for healthcare services.
The Mayor also said the government is setting an example by bringing modern medical equipment and technologies into the country.
Citing an example, Mayor Adanech noted that PET scan technology, which had previously been available only in Kenya in East Africa, has now been introduced at Lafto Specialized Hospital in the capital city.
Following the governmentβs initiative, a private healthcare institution has also recently brought the technology into the country, she added.
Mayor Adanech indicated that the governmentβs direction and commitment are already producing the desired results.
She said Addis Ababaβs ambition to become a health tourism destination means making the city a trusted place for residents, Ethiopians from across the country, foreign nationals living in the city, and visitors who come for work or conferences, where they can also seek reliable medical services.
βWe will fully realize, within the next five years, our goal of making Addis Ababa a city that people can rely on for medical treatment,β Mayor Adanech said.
She emphasized that achieving this goal requires clearly identifying priorities, giving them due attention, planning with commitment, and working in coordination.
