Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie has announced that the city’s school feeding program has made a substantial contribution to reducing student dropout rates caused by economic hardship.

The mayor made the remarks this morning while presenting the city administration’s six-month performance report to the Addis Ababa City Council.

According to Mayor Adanech, 940,329 students are currently benefiting from the initiative, receiving meals twice a day.

The Mayor explained that the program, which is being implemented at kindergarten, primary, and secondary school levels, ensures students receive two daily meals that are nutritious, safe, and of high quality.

Addressing members of the council, Mayor Adanech noted that the school feeding program has generated wide-ranging positive outcomes for the education sector. In addition to easing the economic burden on parents and guardians, it has played a key role in lowering the number of students who drop out of school.

The mayor further emphasized that the program has fostered a strong sense of equality among students and helped reduce psychological stress.

Adanech also disclosed that student uniforms, educational materials, and teachers’ gowns have been distributed on time to strengthen the teaching and learning process across the city’s schools.
