Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Claver Gatete said that Africa should play a prominent role by actively engaging in global climate change negotiations and in shaping solutions to address the challenge.
The 14th Africa Climate Change and Development Conference is underway in Addis Ababa under the theme, “From Pledges to Implementation: The Belém–Antalya–Addis Roadmap.”
Speaking on the occasion, ECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete said that although Africa accounts for only four percent of global carbon emissions, the continent is bearing the severe consequences of climate change. However, he emphasized this reality should not leave Africa confined to a narrative of vulnerability. Instead, Africa should leverage its vast renewable energy potential, mineral resources, young workforce and growing market to play a leading role in shaping solutions at the global level.
He noted that Africa needs $277 billion annually to implement its climate goals through 2030, but currently receives only about 11 percent of the amount required.
The Executive Secretary stressed that climate action should be pursued in conjunction with energy access, industrial development and job creation.
As reported by the Ethiopian News Agency, with more than 600 million Africans still lacking access to electricity, he said expanding renewable energy should serve as a foundation for economic development.
He also said that by leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and adding value to resources produced domestically, Africa can build continental value chains.
