Ethiopia’s macro economic reform is bringing remarkable achievement in all sectors. The Artificial Intelligence is one from the basic economic pillars of the nation.
Ethiopia has been actively advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) through government-led initiatives, infrastructure development, and sector-specific applications.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) is a pioneer in establishing and advancing artificial intelligence in Ethiopia, beginning in 2013 E.C.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) visited the Artificial Intelligence Institute, which has relocated its office to the former Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation building.
During a visit, Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stated that the Institute is driving artificial intelligence interventions across health, agriculture, and the service sector, while also developing capabilities in cloud computing, large-scale data centers, data mining, robotics, and immersive technologies.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) announced that the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has established itself as one of Africa’s most prominent and influential AI institutions.
The Prime Minister has explained the key achievements of the Artificial Intelligence Institute including the development of an internationally patented breast cancer detection technology.
More over, Abiy reaffirmed that the institute has also developed a patented system which is important for identifying coffee diseases these days.
Speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) said the Institute has developed Mesob One Stop a platform offering more than 100 services via a single system.
The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute Director, Worku Gachena (PhD) on his part said the government established the institute five years ago. In that short time, numerous achievements have been made with the help of Artificial Intelligence.
The director noted that the world is increasingly using Artificial Intelligence and witnessing remarkable results, and similarly, Ethiopia is also applying Artificial Intelligence across many sectors.
The newly constructed ten-story smart building is a state-of-the-art facility that inspires the young professionals working at the Artificial Intelligence Institute and supports their drive for innovation.
The institute has been empowering young people by offering summer camp training programs focused on the Artificial Intelligence sector.
The institute has trained the youth through its summer camp program for the past four consecutive years. Moreover, it has played a significant role in launching Master’s and Doctorate programs in artificial intelligence.
The director further stated that Artificial Intelligence is applicable across all sectors, noting that it is especially valuable today for enhancing service delivery and reducing the workload on human beings.
The institute is establishing cloud data centers for both private and government institutions. Worku noted that the institute is also working on five local languages to make them machine-readable, enabling voice-to-text and text-to-voice transcription.
The director emphasized that, although Artificial Intelligence cannot replace human beings, it has paramount importance in enhancing and improving human efficiency more than ever before.
Nearly five years ago, Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stated that Artificial Intelligence has invaluable contributions to agriculture, industry, health, and service sectors.
Ethiopia is striving to become one of the top 20 countries in economy by 2050 in the World.
