Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has announced the launch of the National Precious Metals Refinery at Bole Lemi Special Economic Zone. The facility was established through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) and Sam Precious Metals.
In a message shared on his official social media account, the Prime Minister said the refinery has the capacity to process more than 600 tonnes of precious metals annually.
He described the facility as a major milestone in promoting domestic value addition, strengthening Ethiopia’s mining sector, and positioning the country as a regional hub for precious-metals refining.
Abiy noted that the initiative reflects the Medemer government’s commitment to integrating the country’s natural resources with industrial capacity. He said it is expected to boost export earnings, create skilled employment opportunities, support the jewellery industry, and establish a more transparent and competitive gold value chain.
“From resource extraction to industrial transformation, we are creating greater value at home,” the Prime Minister underscored.
