The Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has announced that the launch of the National Precious Metals Refinery at Bole Lemi Special Economic Zone marks a significant milestone in the country’s industrial development ambitions.
Established through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) and international investor Sam Precious Metals, the refinery represents an important step toward strengthening Ethiopia’s mining sector and advancing domestic value addition.
Mining remains a priority productive sector of the Ethiopian economy, with gold contributing significantly to its growth. The initiative reflects the Medemer Government’s commitment to linking the country’s natural resources with domestic processing, industrial capacity, and sustainable value creation.
At full capacity, the refinery is designed to process more than 600 tonnes of precious metals annually. Its operations will include assaying, refining, and casting gold into export-ready bullion, as well as producing cast and minted gold and silver bars of various purities.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the refinery also lays the foundation for positioning Ethiopia as a regional hub for precious metals refining and manufacturing. It is expected to enhance transparency, strengthen quality assurance, and build confidence in gold valuation while expanding the country’s participation in regional and international markets.
The initiative represents a strategic step toward transforming Ethiopia’s natural resources into greater domestic value, stronger industrial capabilities, and expanded economic opportunities.
“The National Precious Metals Refinery embodies a clear ambition: to move beyond resource extraction toward processing, manufacturing, and creating greater value at home,” the Office of the Prime Minister stated.
