Ethiopia is firmly committed to promoting lasting peace and stability across Africa and the wider region by tackling terrorism, human trafficking, and other emerging security threats, Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives Tagesse Chafo said.
Speaking at the opening of the International Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Forum in Addis Ababa, Speaker Tagesse described the gathering as a vital platform for strengthening parliamentary relations and enhancing international cooperation on intelligence and security issues.
He said the forum offers countries an important opportunity to build strategic partnerships, deepen collaboration, and develop coordinated responses to today’s increasingly complex global security challenges.

The Speaker noted that the conference is taking place at a significant moment for Ethiopia, following the successful conduct of a national election under the rule of law and within a democratic framework, reflecting the country’s ongoing commitment to constitutional governance.
Tagesse also emphasized that Ethiopia’s security agenda extends beyond addressing traditional threats. Alongside efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crime, the government is placing strong emphasis on strengthening food security, building resilient and sustainable food systems, and improving preparedness for global public health emergencies and pandemics.
Highlighting the growing risks posed by cybercrime, he said Ethiopia has enacted and begun implementing comprehensive legal frameworks designed to prevent and combat cyberattacks, one of the most pressing security challenges facing the world today.

The Speaker stressed that the International Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Forum serves as an important bridge for collective action against global security threats. He said it will promote the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices among parliamentarians, policymakers, security experts, and development partners while laying the foundation for enduring strategic partnerships.
According to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, the high-level forum has brought together members of parliament, senior government officials, and security experts from countries around the world to discuss shared security priorities and strengthen international cooperation in Addis Ababa.
