Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Claver Gatete, Holds Talks with Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba on the Future of Health Financing in Africa and the Implementation of the Tangier Declaration.
The delegation led by Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), presented Africa’s new health financing framework, which views health as a fundamental investment for sustainable development and economic growth across African countries. As part of this initiative, Ethiopia has been invited to become one of the first countries to implement this new approach.
This continental effort, guided by the Tangier Declaration, aims to strengthen sustainable health financing by increasing domestic resource mobilization, improving the efficient use of existing resources, expanding innovative financing mechanisms, and enhancing coordinated leadership between the health and finance sectors. Its overall objective is to position health as a cornerstone of Africa’s sustainable development.
During the meeting, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba expressed Ethiopia’s readiness to implement the new African health financing framework. She explained that the country’s ongoing health financing policy reforms, efforts to mobilize domestic resources, and initiatives to strengthen sustainable health financing provide a strong foundation for advancing this continental agenda.
At the conclusion of the discussions, both sides agreed that Ethiopia and UNECA will work closely together to translate the Tangier Declaration into practical results, strengthen sustainable health financing, and develop a model of best practice that can serve as an example for the rest of Africa, according to Ministry of Health
