Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos(PhD), today held discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, at his office.
FM Gedion underscored that Ethiopia attaches significant importance to its robust and all-weather strategic partnership with China. The Minister noted that Ethio-China relations are founded on a longstanding history of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect.
The Minister expressed his gratitude to China’s continued support to Ethiopia’s development endeavors, reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to further strengthening the economic cooperation between the two countries.
FM Gedion also took note of the China-proposed Outlook on Peace and Development in the Horn of Africa (HOA) initiative, highlighting its significance in addressing security, development and governance challenges in the region.
The Minister further reiterated Ethiopia’s continued commitment to advancing the Ethio-China partnership across various multilateral avenues, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), BRICS-plus and the United Nations frameworks.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on his part, stated that his visit to Africa marks his first overseas trip and that Ethiopia is his first destination, noting that this reflects China’s enduring solidarity with Africa and its role as a reliable strategic partner to Ethiopia.
He reaffirmed China’s steadfast commitment to further strengthening the comprehensive partnership with Ethiopia across multiple areas of cooperation.
The two ministers also agreed to deepen strategic coordination on bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation platforms as to Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported it.
