Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Addis Ababa Green Legacy Program, Speaker of the House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, stated that Addis Ababa’s achievements in the Green Legacy Initiative, corridor and riverside development projects, and peacebuilding efforts have become exemplary models not only for Ethiopia but for the entire African continent.

Addressing participants at the event, Agegnehu noted that more than 48 billion seedlings have been planted across Ethiopia since the Green Legacy Initiative was launched seven years ago under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD). He emphasized that, beyond its significant contribution to environmental conservation, the initiative has played a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change while enhancing Ethiopia’s standing and competitiveness on the global stage.

According to the Speaker, the transformative impact of the Green Legacy Initiative was a key factor in Ethiopia’s successful bid to host the COP32 Climate Conference. He revealed that between 70,000 and 80,000 delegates and guests are expected to attend the global summit, which is scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in 2027.

Agegnehu underscored that hosting the international climate conference will bring substantial economic, diplomatic, and environmental benefits to Ethiopia. He further noted that environmental protection and green development activities have now become institutionalized practices throughout the country, including in Addis Ababa.

The Speaker praised the Addis Ababa City Administration for undertaking impactful development projects that serve as benchmarks not only for Ethiopia but also for Africa as a whole. He highlighted that the capital is steadily emerging as a competitive and internationally recognized African city, particularly through its successful corridor and riverside development initiatives.

Under this year’s Green Legacy campaign, being carried out under the theme “Let Us Plant with Hope,” Agegnehu called upon investors, government institutions, private organizations, and all residents of Addis Ababa to actively participate in planting and nurturing seedlings, thereby leaving a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.

Concluding his address, the Speaker expressed his sincere appreciation to Mayor Adanech Abiebie and leaders at all levels of the city administration for their unwavering commitment, exemplary leadership, and tireless dedication to serving the public.
