Guinness World Records has recognised Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe and Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa as the fastest male and female marathon runners respectively, following their triumphs at the TCS London Marathon 2026 on Sunday.
Sawe became the first man to run a legal sub-two-hour marathon, completing the 42.2-kilometre course in 1:59:30, with Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha also dipping under two hours to finish second.

Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa surged ahead in the closing kilometres to win the women’s race in 2:15:41, setting new women’s-only marathon world record and securing her second consecutive London title.
The TCS London Marathon 2026 attracted 59,000 runners for the 42.2-kilometre race, according to TRT Africa.
