Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie has officially launched the construction of housing units for 6,194 city teachers organized under cooperative associations.

The initiative represents a concrete response to one of the teachers’ long-standing and most pressing demands, access to affordable housing in Addis Ababa.

The construction has commenced at various sites across the city for teachers organized under 57 cooperatives who have already saved 25 percent of the total housing cost.

For the project, the Addis Ababa City Administration has provided 40 hectares of land free of charge, with an estimated current value of 24 billion birr. In addition, the Administration has paid 5 billion birr compensation for the land.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said the project demonstrates the city’s strong commitment to significantly expanding housing supply and improving the living conditions of its residents.

The Mayor emphasized that enabling teachers to become homeowners will allow them to lead more stable lives and better fulfill their vital role in educating future generations and contributing to national development through knowledge.

The Mayor also noted that health professionals and other government employees are organizing themselves into cooperatives and awaiting similar opportunities, reaffirming that the City Administration is working diligently to address their housing needs.

Teachers who are benefiting from the project, in turn, expressed that the practical response will further motivate and empower them to carry out their mission of nurturing future generations with greater dedication and enthusiasm.
