A renewed call for peace has been made as demonstrators gathered at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, urging an immediate end to the deepening crisis in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region and calling for the full implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
The peaceful rally, organized by the Tigray Peace and Change Council, brought together participants who expressed concern over what they described as escalating repression, unlawful actions, and renewed war preparations by the illegal TPLF group in the region.
Holding banners and chanting messages in support of peace, the demonstrators called for an immediate halt to any activities that could reignite conflict in Tigray.
They stressed that the people of the region have already endured immense suffering and should not be subjected to another cycle of violence.
Participants declared that “enough is enough,” urging both the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the international community to closely monitor developments in the region and take measures to prevent further instability.
They emphasized that the Pretoria Peace Agreement remains the most viable path toward lasting peace and appealed for its full and faithful implementation.
The protesters also condemned what they described as the unlawful detention and forced roundup of young people, arguing that such actions violate both Ethiopia’s constitutional protections and internationally recognized human rights standards.
They called for the immediate release of those allegedly detained and urged respect for the rights and dignity of civilians.
Speaking to Addis Media Network, Birhane Gebreyesus, Media Head of the Tigray Peace and Change Council, said the demonstration was organized to help prevent a worsening humanitarian and security situation in Tigray and to protect civilians from further suffering and unnecessary bloodshed.
According to Birhane, although the devastating conflict officially ended with the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, its implementation has continued to face serious challenges.
The head alleged that the illegal TPLF group has obstructed the peace process, dismantled the legally established regional administration, and subjected residents to continued hardship while preparing for another round of conflict.
Birhane further claimed that the group has been recruiting young people and pushing them toward renewed warfare, describing such actions as a threat to peace, stability, and the future of the Tigray region.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to safeguard the gains of the peace agreement and ensure that the people of Tigray are able to live in peace, security, and dignity.
The demonstration concluded with participants reiterating their call for dialogue, the protection of civilians, respect for human rights, and sustained efforts to preserve peace and stability in the Tigray Region.
