The African Logistics and Communication Symposium (ALCS), jointly organized by Ethiopia and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), officially opened in Addis Ababa, bringing together senior military leaders and defense experts from across the continent.
The symposium, which runs through August 1, aims to strengthen Africa’s collective capacity to address evolving security challenges by advancing modern technologies, enhancing logistics systems, and improving military communication capabilities.
Addressing the opening ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga stressed that tackling Africa’s complex security challenges requires stronger cooperation among African nations and their international partners.
“The United States remains committed to deepening its partnerships with African countries and supporting the continent’s priority areas,” the ambassador said.
Massinga noted that the symposium provides a valuable platform for expanding long-term Africa-U.S. cooperation through strengthened institutional capacity, enhanced military education, and the development of a sustainable defense economy. He reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting African countries in building sustainable military readiness and resilient defense capabilities.
The ambassador further emphasized that improving military logistics and communication systems is essential not only for strengthening security but also for creating a stable environment that supports trade, investment, and economic growth across the continent.
He underscored the importance of enhanced military preparedness and closer regional cooperation to effectively combat terrorism, human trafficking, cyberattacks, and armed conflicts.
According to Massinga, the symposium will also foster stronger collaboration among governments, military institutions, and the public and private sectors, helping build lasting partnerships to address shared security concerns.
The ambassador urged participants to translate their discussions into practical, actionable outcomes and expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to organizing the event.
The opening ceremony was attended by Ethiopian Minister of Defense Engineer Aisha Mohammed, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Chief of the Defense Logistics Main Department Lieutenant General Abdurahman Ismail, senior Ethiopian military officials, and military leaders from several African countries, according to ENA.
