Ethiopia has constructed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam entirely without foreign loans, demonstrating the nation’s capability and self-reliance.
Speaking at the Tenth Regular Session of the Sixth House of People’s Representatives, Fifth-Year Term, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed provided detailed explanations and responded to questions raised by members of Parliament this morning.
Addressing Parliament, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, along with other major national projects, has been constructed through the contributions of Ethiopians and the diaspora community, reflecting a spirit of national ownership and unity.

Abiy also highlighted numerous large-scale projects across the country that are either completed or currently under construction, all demonstrating Ethiopia’s commitment to self-driven development.
The GERD, which is built on the Abbay River, is Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam and a symbol of Ethiopia’s ambition to become a regional energy hub.
Prime Minister Abiy noted that the dam is already supplying electricity domestically and to neighboring countries, contributing to regional energy stability.
The Prime Minister further stressed that the GERD plays a critical role in water regulation, irrigation, and economic development, making it a strategic asset not only for Ethiopia but for the entire region.
Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister described the GERD as a testament to national pride, underscoring Ethiopia’s commitment to leveraging its resources for a sustainable development to its citizens.
