Urban development goes beyond constructing buildings and roads; it also involves creating safe, healthy, and accessible environments where citizens can live, work, and thrive. In this regard, sports infrastructure plays a vital role in promoting public health, nurturing young talent, strengthening social cohesion, and improving the overall quality of urban life.

In the past, many neighbourhoods in Addis Ababa lacked adequate sports facilities, forcing children and young people to play football on busy roads, exposing them to traffic accidents and other safety risks. The shortage of designated playgrounds also limited opportunities for recreation and physical activity.

Meanwhile, open spaces that could have served as playgrounds and recreational areas were often left neglected, used as dumping grounds, or allocated for other developments, reducing the availability of safe public spaces for residents.

Today, Addis Ababa is working to reverse this trend by transforming underutilized open spaces into modern sports and recreational facilities. The initiatives also include upgrading existing venues and providing the necessary infrastructure to make them safer, more accessible, and suitable for a wider range of sporting activities. These efforts are contributing to the transformation of the capital’s urban landscape, creating better opportunities for residents to engage in sports while supporting the development of a modern, inclusive, and liveable city.

The ongoing transformation is aligned with the development vision of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), which emphasizes modernizing urban infrastructure and improving the quality of life for citizens.

According to the Addis Ababa City Mayor’s Office, construction has commenced this year on 150 additional sports facilities, further expanding the city’s capacity to accommodate growing demand for sporting and recreational spaces. Beyond expanding infrastructure, the initiative is expected to help young people develop their athletic abilities, identify and nurture emerging talent, and strengthen the overall capacity of the city’s sports sector.

The development of modern sports facilities is also enhancing Addis Ababa’s potential to host international sporting competitions. By improving the availability and quality of sports infrastructure, the capital is strengthening its prospects of attracting major sporting events, athletes, visitors, and investment.

Hosting international competitions can generate wider economic benefits by stimulating tourism, supporting local businesses, creating employment opportunities, and showcasing the city to the international community. These developments could also help establish Addis Ababa as an emerging destination for sports tourism in Africa.

At the community level, accessible sports facilities can encourage healthier lifestyles, promote positive youth engagement, and strengthen social interaction by providing safe spaces for people of different ages and backgrounds.

Realizing the city’s ambitions requires sustained collaboration among the city administration, sports institutions, the private sector, athletes, and the wider community. Such cooperation will be essential to maintaining the facilities, expanding access to sporting opportunities, and ensuring that the benefits of urban development reach residents across the capital. With continued investment in sports infrastructure and coordinated efforts to develop athletic talent, Addis Ababa is strengthening its foundation for a more vibrant sporting culture while advancing its ambition to become a competitive destination for international sporting events.
