Ethiopian Academy of Sciences and Slovenian Embassy Inaugurate Modern Beekeeping Project

The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) has officially inaugurated a new modern beehive project within its premises, established with the support of the Slovenian Embassy to introduce advanced beekeeping techniques.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Ethiopia Kristina Radej, senior officials of the Academy, Getachew Gebru(PhD), Chairperson of the Agricultural Working Group, and Workneh(PhD), an EAS Fellow from the Agricultural Working Group, both of whom delivered remarks during the event. Professor Teketel Yohannes, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, along with EAS Secretariat staff members, also attended the ceremony.

In his opening remarks, Professor Belay Kassa, President of the Academy, emphasized that fostering international partnerships to enable the transfer of technology and scientific knowledge is among the core functions of the Academy. He expressed his appreciation for the efforts to bring Slovenia’s extensive expertise in modern beekeeping and advanced hive construction to Ethiopia.

Ambassador Radej highlighted that “Science Diplomacy” is a cornerstone of the Slovenian Embassy’s activities in Ethiopia. She explained that they are actively working to introduce modern beekeeping methods across various regions of the country.

The Ambassador further noted that the timing of the inauguration is particularly significant as it coincides with World Bee Day, celebrated in May. This alignment underscores the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations and improving community livelihoods through the sector
