Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced that Ethiopia’s gold sector has developed the capacity to generate USD 5.5 billion in export revenue within a single year, describing the achievement as a major milestone in the country’s economic transformation.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while responding to questions from members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives during the 30th Regular Session of the fifth year of the current parliamentary term, where he presented the government’s performance report for the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year.

Addressing economic issues, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted Ethiopia’s significant progress in gold production and exports. He recalled that over the 27-year period from 1984 to 2011 E.C., the country earned a cumulative USD 3.7 billion from gold exports.

In contrast, he said Ethiopia has now built the capacity to generate USD 5.5 billion in gold export revenue in a single year, an achievement that exceeds the total earnings recorded during the previous 27 years.

The Prime Minister described the milestone as clear evidence of Ethiopia’s accelerating economic growth, emphasizing that the country’s progress is not merely reflected in statistics but is tangible, visible, and measurable.
