President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Taye Atske Selassie, speaking about Ethiopia’s efforts to secure reliable access to the sea, said the country’s approach is based on mutual benefit and diplomatic give-and-take. He stressed that securing dependable access to the sea is not only important for advancing shared regional and continental interests but should also be regarded as a fundamental right.

The President made the remarks in his opening address to the joint session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation, where he spoke about national peace, diplomatic efforts, and the pursuit of shared prosperity.

Addressing domestic affairs, President Taye Atske has called for Ethiopia’s politics to be guided by the supremacy of ideas, dedicated to serving the people, and grounded in civility as a shared national value.

President Taye said the recently concluded National Dialogue process had made a significant contribution toward building a strong intellectual and political foundation for Ethiopia as a multinational state. He said the process had also helped promote a political culture in which ideas and constructive debate take precedence.

The President emphasized that peace and prosperity remain the primary priorities of the Ethiopian people and government. Accordingly, he said the government remains willing to engage in peaceful dialogue and discussions even with groups whose positions differ from these objectives, noting that such efforts have already produced results.

The President further noted that new developments and ideas inevitably bring new challenges. Such challenges, he said, should be addressed through healthy, constructive thinking and solutions grounded in positive ideas.

He also called for collective efforts to draw on Ethiopia’s history and accumulated experience to advance national development, strengthen the foundations of the country’s political system, and uphold the dignity and respect of the national flag.
