In a message posted on its official social media platforms, the Office of the Prime Minister celebrated Addis Ababa’s recognition with the 2026 Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities.
“It is a proud moment for Ethiopia that Addis Ababa has been recognized with the 2026 Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, reflecting the city’s progress in sustainable urban development and its continued transformation,” the statement reads.
The Office emphasized the need to continue developing modern, inclusive and sustainable cities while preserving their history, heritage and identity.
“It is also an opportunity to look ahead. We must continue building modern, inclusive and sustainable cities while preserving the history, heritage and identity that make each of them unique,” the Office underscored.
It noted that urban development extends beyond infrastructure to include creating quality public spaces, fostering a culture of urbanity and improving living and working conditions.
“Urban development is about more than infrastructure. It is about fostering a culture of urbanity, creating quality public spaces and making our cities better places to live and work,” it said in its statement.
The Office also highlighted the potential of other Ethiopian cities, including Harar, Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Jimma, Arba Minch and Dire Dawa, to become models of sustainable urban development.
“Our vision must extend beyond Addis Ababa. From Harar to Bahir Dar, Hawassa to Jimma, Arba Minch to Dire Dawa, every Ethiopian city has the potential to become a model of sustainable urban development,” the PM Office further stated.
It called for extending sustainable urban development efforts beyond Addis Ababa, with an emphasis on building cities that embrace the future while maintaining their historical and cultural identities.
“Today, Addis Ababa. Tomorrow, a new chapter for every Ethiopian city. Let us build cities that embrace the future without losing their connection to the past,” it concluded.
