AMN PLUS-November 4, 2026

The introduction of city buses converted from diesel to natural gas in Addis Ababa represents more than an ordinary change in the transport system.

Viewed within the development vision of the Medemer (Synergy) Government, it is a strategic move aimed at converting the country’s resources into tangible public benefits, strengthening economic independence, building technological capacity, and promoting people-centered urban development.

On November 1, 2026, the first 26 buses converted from diesel to natural gas entered service. An additional 400 new natural gas-powered buses are also expected to arrive. Beyond the benefits this transition offers in terms of fares, operational costs, and environmental protection, it carries broader development significance.

The major implications of this initiative for the city and its residents, viewed from the Medemer Government’s development perspective, can be examined under the following points:

✅Harnessing the Country’s Natural Resources for Tangible Public Benefit

Ethiopia is endowed with natural resources. However, the mere availability of resources does not automatically translate into development. What matters most is the ability to transform these resources into productive assets that deliver tangible benefits to the public.

Transporting natural gas produced in Gode to the capital and putting it to use in the urban transport sector is a practical demonstration of this principle.

It shows that Ethiopia can go beyond simply possessing natural resources and use its resources to improve the living standards of its citizens.

✅Reducing Foreign Exchange Pressure and Strengthening Economic Independence

Fuel imports are among the major sources of foreign currency expenditure for Ethiopia. Operating urban buses on domestically produced natural gas will help reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

This means:

Saving foreign currency currently spent on fuel imports;

Channeling domestic resources into productive sectors;

Mitigating economic pressures arising from fluctuations in international fuel prices; and Strengthening the country’s economic resilience.

This transition reinforces Ethiopia’s broader effort to use its own resources to ease economic pressures and strengthen its economic independence.

✅Reducing Environmental and Economic Pressures on Citizens

Transportation costs are among the factors that determine the daily cost of living for urban residents.

When the operating costs of buses decline, and the resulting savings are effectively passed on to passengers, citizens can benefit from more affordable public transport services.

Urban development is not limited to constructing roads, buildings, and bridges. It also involves creating conditions in which people can live in clean air, a healthy environment, and improved living conditions.

The transition from diesel to natural gas also helps reduce certain air pollutants and particulate emissions from vehicles.

This contributes to:

Reducing air pollution;

Creating a healthier environment for urban residents; Supporting the development of a greener city; and Improving the city’s environmental sustainability.

For cities such as Addis Ababa, the transition from diesel to natural gas represents an important step toward more sustainable energy use.

✅Building Domestic Capacity, Technology, and Knowledge

One of the major lessons of this project is that development involves not only producing natural gas but also building the technological capacity and expertise required to put it to practical use.

Transporting gas from its production site to Addis Ababa, constructing gas refueling stations, converting buses, and carrying out the work using domestic human resources all contribute to developing new technological and professional capabilities.

The fact that Ethiopian professionals have undertaken this work represents a significant achievement.

This capacity can subsequently be extended to other sectors of the economy. It creates opportunities to develop local expertise, expand technical knowledge, and strengthen the maintenance and technology industries.

✅Demonstrating the Medemer Government’s Development Approach in Practice

The central principle of the Medemer philosophy is to bring together existing resources, capabilities, knowledge, and development opportunities and mobilize them toward shared objectives.

Viewed from this perspective, the project demonstrates how capacities across different sectors can be coordinated to deliver tangible results.

These include:

Resources generated by the energy sector; Services provided by the transport sector; Solutions developed through the technology sector; Knowledge and expertise contributed by human resources; and Coordination among government institutions.

When these elements are brought together, the result goes beyond the success of a single sector and strengthens the country’s overall development capacity.

✅Making Addis Ababa a Modern and Globally Competitive City

Addis Ababa is not only Ethiopia’s capital but also a diplomatic and economic hub of Africa. Therefore, its transport system needs to be modern, affordable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable.

According to information shared by Office of the Mayor of Addis Ababa on its official social media page, efforts are underway to achieve this vision.

The introduction of natural gas-powered buses, when developed in an integrated manner alongside electric buses, light rail, modern bus corridors, and pedestrian-friendly urban infrastructure, can help make Addis Ababa a city with improved living conditions.

The process of transforming Addis Ababa into a showcase of prosperity will continue to gain momentum.
