Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie on this afternoon announced the opening of a new seven-storey Advanced Medical Center at Ras Desta Damtew Hospital, saying the state-of-the-art facility will significantly expand the hospital’s capacity and improve access to modern healthcare services through advanced diagnostic technology, increased bed space, and upgraded emergency and surgical care.

Here is the full statement:
“Today, we officially inaugurated the New Advanced Medical Center at Ras Desta Damtew Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide high-quality, modern healthcare services to our citizens,” the Mayor said.
The previous hospital building had become severely dilapidated, resulting in overcrowded conditions for patients and limiting the quality of care due to outdated medical equipment and inadequate infrastructure. To address these longstanding challenges, we have constructed a modern, seven-storey medical center that is clean, spacious, and fully equipped with advanced technology. This new facility will substantially enhance the scope and quality of healthcare services while significantly expanding the hospital’s service capacity.

The New Advanced Medical Center is equipped with advanced, diagnostic technologies powered by 2026 AI product, including MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, and mobile X-ray systems, as well as an oxygen generation plant capable of producing 30,000 liters of oxygen per hour.

The hospital’s inpatient capacity has increased from 147 to 360 beds, the number of operating theatres has expanded from three to seven, and the intensive care unit now accommodates 19 beds. In addition, a modern emergency department has been established in accordance with contemporary healthcare standards to provide timely and efficient emergency services.
To create a supportive environment for both patients and healthcare professionals, the facility also includes dedicated staff lounges, a library, modern offices, meeting halls, and a staff cafeteria, all designed to enhance working conditions and improve the overall quality of care.

Meeting the growing healthcare needs of Addis Ababa requires collaboration beyond the public sector alone. Alongside strengthening public health institutions, we remain committed to supporting private-sector investment in healthcare so that more Ethiopians can access advanced medical treatment within the country, reducing the need to seek specialized care abroad. This initiative reflects our broader commitment to building a healthcare system that meets international standards and serves the needs of our people.

On behalf of the patients, the healthcare professionals, and myself, I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone whose dedication, cooperation, and hard work made the timely completion of the New Advanced Medical Center possible. Your contribution has created a lasting investment in the health and well-being of our community, and together we have taken another important step toward delivering accessible, modern, and high-quality healthcare for all.
