In Addis Ababa, 75% of this year’s Green Legacy Initiative target has been achieved so far.
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which has been implemented to combat climate change and enhance food security, was officially launched for this year’s campaign on June 14, 2026.
Under this year’s campaign, launched with the theme “Let’s Plant Hope,” Addis Ababa planned to plant 6 million seedlings. To date, 4,469,710 seedlings have been planted.
As a result, 75% of the city’s annual target has been achieved, as recently announced by Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie.
Unlike previous years, this year’s Green Legacy campaign is closely linked to improving citizens’ economic well-being. A significant portion of the seedlings planted consists of fruit trees such as avocado, mango, papaya, apple, and guava, along with plants that provide livestock feed and help strengthen soil and water conservation. Beyond enhancing the city’s greenery and beauty, the program is also producing significant results by increasing residents’ incomes and creating employment opportunities for young people.
Recognizing that planting seedlings alone is not enough to achieve the intended goals, special attention is being given to the care and maintenance of the planted seedlings.
Accordingly, the program aims to achieve a seedling survival rate of over 90%. A modern digital technology system has also been introduced to monitor the growth and condition of the seedlings, ensuring sustainable follow-up and maintenance.
At the national level, preparations have been completed to plant 8 billion seedlings under this year’s Green Legacy Initiative, and implementation is now underway.
Since the initiative began in 2019, Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion seedlings through successive annual campaigns. Once this year’s program is successfully completed, it is expected to surpass its planned target.
