Journalists from Addis Media Network’s (AMN) English Desk have held a comprehensive discussion on Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, examining its significance, achievements, and implications for the country’s democratic journey and the wider African continent.

During the discussion, journalists reflected on current developments surrounding the election and highlighted its importance in strengthening Ethiopia’s efforts toward building an enduring democratic system. The journalists explored a wide range of issues related to the electoral process, emphasizing the resilience, commitment, and determination demonstrated by Ethiopians in ensuring a peaceful and democratic election.

The discussion noted that the election, which involved more than 54 million registered voters, provides a significant opportunity to evaluate Ethiopia’s democratic progress. Journalists underscored that the successful conduct of such a large-scale election demonstrates the growing confidence of citizens in democratic institutions and electoral processes.

According to the journalists, Ethiopia’s 7th General Election serves as an important example for other African nations. They stressed that the election showcased the Ethiopian people’s strong belief in ballots rather than violence as the legitimate path to political power.

The election was described as one of the most inclusive in the country’s history, featuring record voter registration exceeding 54 million citizens and the establishment of more than 52,000 polling stations across the nation.

Another key topic of discussion was the role of the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observer Missions. Journalists examined the significance of the observers’ presence and reviewed the preliminary assessment reports issued by both organizations. The discussion highlighted the positive contribution of African-led election observation efforts in promoting transparency, credibility, and confidence in democratic processes.

Journalists also emphasized the principle that African challenges should be addressed through African solutions. In this regard, the involvement of AU and IGAD observers was viewed as a practical demonstration of regional cooperation and African ownership of democratic development.

Furthermore, the journalists discussed how the preliminary observations of the AU and IGAD missions reflected important lessons regarding electoral management, citizen participation, and democratic governance. They noted that Africa’s aspiration for democratically elected leadership can be realized through inclusive and credible electoral processes, and that Ethiopia’s election represents a significant step in that direction.

Concluding the discussion, the journalists stated that Ethiopia’s electoral experience carries lessons that extend beyond the country’s borders. They argued that fellow African nations can draw valuable insights from Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen democratic participation and electoral institutions. The journalists expressed optimism that Ethiopia’s continued commitment to democratic development will contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and democratic future for the African continent.
